Artist Statement

Since September, my current work has taken a few different turns. In order to fully explore the challenging concept of Beauty and the best way possible to portray this within contemporary art, I worked with a variety of different mediums such as; drawings, paintings, photography, prints, and video to illustrate a medley of digital imagery, collages and painting.

To understand the concept of beauty, firstly a definition is needed. The word ‘Beauty’ is described in the Oxford English Dictionary as firstly; “a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially sight’. Secondly, it is also described as; ‘a beautiful woman’. Within the early stages of my work, I’ve attempted to explore the representation of the female body within feminist art. I looked at works by Georgia O’keeffe, Anya Gallaccio and Pamela Lordi. By using a specific flower such as the rose, I attempted to use this to represent a symbol of female beauty.

However, this was found to be a confusing route to go down, because it did not clearly represent the illustration I would have liked the viewer to perceive. I have now found that exploring and trying out different aesthetics in colour, shape and form has led me to a more profound understanding of concepts of beauty and aesthetics and the different ways they can be represented.

Beauty cannot be accurately portrayed within one medium. Certain artists draw from different experiences such as Yago Hortal and Andy Warhol. By the use of acrylic paint, Hortal manipulates the canvas to create a balanced chaos through using thick florescent paint. Whereas Warhol screen-prints with psychedelic colours over a backdrop of undergrowth in his work ‘Flowers’ 1964. I found both of these artists works to be extremely pleasing to the aesthetic senses, of which I found helped me realise what work I wanted to produce.

For my final outcomes, I’ve chosen to represent this concept in two different mediums of which I’ve worked with throughout my second year. The selection of Photoshop Collages represents the concept behind the old Greek Myth of the Narcissist. These images reflect an unhealthy state of mind and elusion, and is an idea of what state of mind the narcissist was in when he died alone staring at his reflection by the river. These images challenge the ideas between natural beauty and artificial beauty. and turning a naturally beautiful flower in to an artificially beautiful flower.

For my second outcome, I felt that the traditional method of painting was the best way to create a picture that just focuses purely on the aesthetic qualities found pleasing to the human eye. Through the mixture of primary colours and by using this spontaneous method of painting, a number of different colours came through when on the landscape canvas and produced a series of colour and line I was happy with.

I feel that these selected pieces represent what I have learnt while developing my skills in my practice this year. These pieces challenge historical and contemporary ideas throughout the vast concept of beauty, by using ancient and modern-day mediums.

Field Reflection

The field modules this year have been both a struggle and a great source of ideas to take forward in to my subject practice. The first module ‘Home Truths’ was mainly focused on different ceramic processes. This project was challenging as I had never worked in this medium before, but wanted to expand my practical kills and try it. It also challenged my personal perception of home and reminded me of the values that a ‘home’ holds. For me this was personal and hard to grasp as I have never properly had a stable family home, this made it difficult to think of ideas originally but as soon as i developed my own way of working it all came together at the end, and I used my experiences to my strengths. The aim for this project was to follow the tradition of storytelling using surface decoration and explore how contemporary artists are approaching this. I found this narrative way of working really interesting and something I enjoyed. One of the final outcomes I have decided to present is a narrative series of images. I have drawn this idea from the first field module which I think has worked really well.

The second module in Field lead us to learn about material culture in Morocco, and to focus on colour and material upon our visit. This module has influenced my subject work massively. Before visiting I did a lot of research about the country and found out how different their society is to us. The main point I focused on and found most interesting was how men and women are treated so differently. Being a woman and visiting this country, I had to prepare myself for the hassle and take some precautions such as cover my hair and to bring clothes which don’t show a lot of skin of flatter my figure. How me and my female friends were treated on our visit influenced my general interest and subject ideas for the second term. I started taking a big interest in to feminist artists. And from this point I started to focus on the concept of ‘Beauty’.

Not only did the trip to Morocco influence my subject work in that way, but also through the concept of colour. I have always loved using bright colours in my work, but witnessing the amount of colour all over Morocco inspired this even more. I tried bringing this idea through with my feminist work although towards the end I decided that just focusing on colour was a clearer route for me. My final outcomes for this year in my subject work are both filled with technicolored shapes and images. Focusing on aesthetically pleasing qualities to develop my practical skills and represent the concept of ‘beauty’ has put me in a good position for the start of third year.

Field has helped me to realise what concepts I am most interested in and what could be a strong starting point for the subject module next year.

Second Final Outcome

For my second outcome, I felt that the traditional method of painting was the best way to create a picture that just focuses purely on the aesthetic qualities found pleasing to the human eye. Through the mixture of primary colours and by using this spontaneous method of painting, a number of different colours came through when on the landscape canvas and produced a series of colour and line I was happy with.

I feel that these selected pieces represent what I have learnt while developing my skills in my practice this year. These pieces challenge historical and contemporary ideas throughout the vast concept of beauty, by using ancient and modern-day mediums.

First Final Outcome

I have selected these 3 collages that I have made on photoshop for the exhibition. I feel that these images represent the concept behind the old Greek Myth of the Narcissist.

Final Development

I came across Andy Warhol’s flower series of Screen-prints which helped me develop ideas for my site specific exhibition. I made large monoprints from my own flower images taken around Cardiff. I then experimented with pens and paint over the top of these and worked in to them. I filled in the flowers with neon paint as coming back from Morocco had inspired me to bring even more colour in to my work. I didn’t think these worked very well but i liked developing my skills in the print room.

I noticed that the majority of flowers found around Cardiff at this time were daffodils, the narcissist flower. I found this concept very interesting and found a famous poem by William Wordsworth which I wanted to incorporate in my work. I picked the last like of the poem to then write upon a mirror. Staring in to the mirror represents the narcissist staring in to the water in the Greek Myth. Of which he then falls in love with himself and died there on the river bank. A daffodil then grows in his place, hence the name the narcissist flower.

mirror I then again rejected this idea for my exhibition piece as I wanted to include an array of bright colour throughout my work which i felt would be difficult when using text on mirrors. I decided to focus on contemporary artist using bright colours in their work like Yogo Hortal, who’s paintings are aesthetically pleasing with the use of thick florescent paint. I wanted to incorporate my images of the daffodil and the bright neon colours inspired by Hortal and Warhol. I thought about how I could play around with this and started developing collages on photoshop. I loved how these turned out.

The images represent an unhealthy state of mind and elusion, and is an idea of what state of mind the narcissist was in when he died alone staring at his reflection by the river. These images challenge the ideas between natural beauty and artificial beauty. and turning a naturally beautiful flower in to an artificially beautiful flower.

I continued to explore the use of florescent acrylics in a landscape format which relates back to my initial starting point of looking at Lanyons landscape ‘Beach Girl’. I focused on “a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially sight” which is what beauty is described as in the english dictionary.  I felt that these paintings and collages were a success which is why I’ve put them in the exhibition and I am continuing to use photoshop. I have over layered images of my paintings and images of flowers to develop this idea further.

Using my own images of flowers, I decided to merge them all together using a GIFF app on my IPhone, I think that over summer I will develop this idea. I think that making psychedelic elusions full of colour would be something I would be really interested in.

Ideas for Final Piece

I really like how these paintings are coming together. I feel that this ‘Swipe Technique’ is a great way of mixing the colours together. I also like how unpredictable this method of painting is. The end result is always a surprise. In the larger piece at the bottom I have mixed in a small amount of PVA glue to create small cracks in the canvas. I think this could work really well as it exposes the colouring underneath. I like both Landscape and portrait images and am struggling to decide which way looks best for my final piece.

Text on Mirror

After finding one of William Wordsworth’s most famous poems; ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,’ I wanted to experiment with it in my work and see if i could develop this idea for my final piece. I looked in to the meaning of daffodils and this flower is known as the ‘Narcissist flower’. In the old Greek Myth of narcissist, the narcissist died staring at his own reflection and the daffodil grew where his body lay. I used the mirror to represent the water from this story. I like this concept a lot although i feel that going down this route for my final piece wouldn’t be using the influences I love from my field project. Which is using colour.

I also thought about presenting this next to my own images of daffodils which would fit the theme.
